The Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees on Monday approved two administrative-term coaching contracts, confirming Rafael Thomas as the next head football coach at Mesquite High School and Terrence Orr II as the head coach at Poteet High School.
Principal Mr. Johnson introduced Coach Rafael Thomas and outlined his experience, saying Thomas “comes to Mesquite ISD with a decade of coaching experience” including prior roles at Conroe, Lufkin and Marshall high schools and recent success as head coach and assistant athletic director at Jack Yates High School. After a motion to approve the administrative contract, the board voted in favor by voice and the motion passed.
For Poteet High School, district leaders recommended Terrence Orr II, who began coaching in Mesquite ISD in 2012 and has since worked in several Texas programs. Trustees approved the Poteet contract by voice vote as well. Both coaches addressed the board and thanked family and district staff for the opportunity; Coach Orr said he intends to build a “culture of excellence in a family within the Poteet Athletic Program.”
The approvals were part of the meeting’s personnel agenda and carried without recorded opposition. The board did not discuss salary details on the public record during the approvals; those terms are reflected in the administrative contracts on file with Human Resources.
