Mesquite ISD board adopts 2025 legislative priorities, calls for higher basic allotment and opposes vouchers

Communications staff summarized priorities and asked the board to endorse calls to raise the basic allotment (the state's per‑student funding foundation) and to index it for inflation. "We are asking that the legislature raise the basic allotment," the presenter said, noting that the allotment has not been raised since House Bill 3 in 2019 and that inflation and underfunded program areas justify the request. The presenter and trustees emphasized funding gaps they estimate at roughly $31,000,000 across school safety, early education, special education and career/technology areas and asked legislators to fund district grow‑your‑own teacher initiatives.
The priorities also include a continued district position to "prevent the use of tax dollars for private school funding." Trustees moved and approved the legislative priorities by voice vote and said district teams and community members will travel to Austin to advocate for the ask.
No formal veto or change was made to the priorities; staff will coordinate advocacy with partner districts in North Texas.
