Mesquite ISD presents Apple Corps awards to two longtime teachers, honors para and community partner

The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees used part of its Nov. 11 meeting to recognize outstanding teachers, paraprofessionals and community partners.
Sabrina Smith introduced the Apple Corps program and recognized Vula Stefanou, an advanced‑level math teacher at West Mesquite High School, and Sandra Simmons, a kindergarten teacher at Morange Elementary with decades of service. "I think teaching is equally important for the teacher as it is for the students," Stefanou said, reflecting on her 14 years at West Mesquite and the principals and colleagues who supported her. Sandra Simmons told the board she was "deeply grateful" for the recognition and reflected on 32 years of teaching in Mesquite.
The board also presented a Star Para award to Patricia Carson, with a gift card provided by 1st Financial Group of America, and highlighted a new family‑engagement partnership with Common Threads Cooking for Life, which will provide healthy cooking classes and the Small Bites after‑school program. Trustees and administrators invited honorees and families to stand for recognition and lauded staff contributions districtwide.
No board action was required for the recognitions; trustees thanked the honorees and moved on to business items.
