MCOE reports 1,136 students experiencing homelessness; JJCP grant supports weekly food program

Dr. Nicole (speaker 3) told trustees Oct. 13 that Mendocino County saw its highest count of student homelessness in recent years: "We have the highest homeless count that we've had in Mendocino County at 1,136 students, for the 2425 school year." Staff said 161 of those students are served weekly across 19 schools and that the county received an additional JJCP grant award of $70,000 to support food programs.
The student services report also described expanded trainings and a new family/community liaison practice intended to bolster support and coordination across districts. Trustees asked clarifying questions about homelessness classifications (for example, "doubled up" households, shelter definitions and travel trailers) and staff explained the different categories used for state reporting.
Board members requested additional data and links to the student services documentation; staff reiterated they would provide follow-up materials for district and public review.
