Students outline recycling, compost and bin upgrades after $15,000 county grant

Student leaders from the district’s Safe Club and the middle‑school Green Team described current sustainability activities and how a recent county grant will expand them.
“My name is Alexis Soter. I am the project chair of Safe Club,” student Alexis Soter told the board as she described weekly classroom recycling, a pollinator garden and recycled craft projects. Students said the $15,000 award from the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District will pay for larger classroom bins, mixed recycling containers for common areas and carts to transport materials between buildings.
Student presenters from the elementary, middle and high schools outlined existing programs that the grant will scale: a six‑month shoe drive that diverted more than 2,150 pounds of shoes, pre‑consumer food composting that diverted about 14,250 pounds of waste since August 2024, and classroom and cafeteria recycling pilots. They asked the board to support items the grant will not cover, including additional permanent mixed‑recycling stations and educational signage to reduce contamination.
Superintendent Jeff Harrison thanked the students and noted the district had also received a 2025 Recycle Ohio grant that funded 14 high‑school hand dryers and a bottle‑filling station. Board members praised the student work and asked administration to track metrics the district will report back to county grantors.
