Bastrop ISD board approves filing low-attendance waiver after Jan. 27 cold-weather absence spike

District staff requested permission to file a weather-related low-attendance waiver with the Texas Education Agency for Jan. 27, 2026. Chris Tawater, Director of PEIMS and Data Quality, told the board that districtwide attendance that day was 80.9%, more than ten percentage points below the prior school year’s average of 92.9%, and attributed the drop to an extreme cold warning issued by the National Weather Service.
Dr. Matthew Mix moved to approve filing the waiver and Josh Coy seconded; the board voted by show of hands and the motion carried unanimously. The administration recommended filing under Section 3.8.1.4 of the Student Attendance Accounting Handbook so the instructional day may be excluded from average daily attendance and Foundation School Program funding calculations for 2026–27.
