Gallup accepts $3 million state grant to supplement wastewater treatment plant work

The Gallup City Council voted Jan. 20 to accept a $3 million Special Appropriation Grant from the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration to support improvements at the city's Wastewater Treatment Plant. Wastewater Superintendent Redd Gashytewa and City Project Manager Keegan Mackenzie-Chavez presented the resolution (R2026-6) and asked the council to approve a budget adjustment to record the grant revenue and related expenditures in Fund 304.
Assistant Wastewater Superintendent Nicole Hawthorne told the council the grant proceeds "may be used to purchase the materials needed to repair the headworks at the plant" and noted that the funds must be expended by June 30, 2026. City Manager Frank Chiapetti said the city has already received $24 million from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund for Phase I of plant improvements and that the $3 million grant will supplement that Phase I work. Councilor Linda Garcia moved to approve Resolution R2026-6 and Councilor Sierra Yazzie Asamoa-Tutu seconded; roll call was unanimous in favor.
