Owner given 90 days to fix junk, unserviceable vehicles at Brooker property

The Alachua County code enforcement special magistrate on Sept. 5 heard evidence that the property at 23331 North State Road 235 in Brooker had accumulated junk and contained vehicles that appeared unserviceable. County staff said the owner had been notified and recommended 30 days to comply and daily fines if the violations continued.
Kelly Poirier, the county code officer assigned to the case, told the hearing she inspected the parcel, presented photographs and the notice of violation and said the county had incurred $490 in costs bringing the action. Poirier recommended the respondent be ordered to correct violations including parking rules, accumulation of junk, and unserviceable vehicles or face a daily fine.
Owner William Howard responded in person and described an ongoing ‘‘ground up restoration’’ of a pickup truck that he said is currently not safe to drive. He told the magistrate, "No, sir. You cannot because it wasn't safe, and I'm in the middle of making it safe." Howard said health problems limit his labor and estimated he would need about 60–90 days to finish work.
After discussing what had already been removed and that the officer could re-inspect, the magistrate set a compliance deadline of 90 days and instructed Howard to notify the officer when the corrective work was complete. The county advised failure to comply after that date could trigger the daily fine and further enforcement steps.
