Blythe City Council honors Palo Verde Unified Teachers of the Year

Mayor Joseph DeConinck and Superintendent April Smith recognized five educators as Palo Verde Unified School District’s 2026 Teachers of the Year, highlighting efforts across grade levels. The honorees were Terra Hickox (special education, Palo Verde High School), Ashley Vargas (1st grade, Appleby Elementary), Luis Benvenutti (TK–2 special education, Ruth Brown Elementary), Bernadette Wells (5th grade, Margaret White Elementary) and Ariel Tennefos (math, Twin Palms High School).
The council also adopted proclamations marking May as Building Safety Month and celebrating Bethel AME Church and the National Day of Prayer on May 7, 2026. The recognitions took place near the start of the meeting, which was called to order by Mayor DeConinck at 6:00 p.m.
