Lynden council awards $479,000 contract for Community Center Phase I renovations

The Lynden City Council voted 7-0 on Sept. 16 to award a contract for Phase I renovations of the Community Center at 401 Grover Street to Summit Construction Group for $479,000 plus Washington State sales tax. Councilor Gary Bode moved the award and Councilor Mark Wohlrab seconded the motion.
City documents describe the project scope as removal and replacement of the existing HVAC system and T-bar ceilings, hazmat work to remove asbestos-containing material in gypsum board texture, electrical work and structural strengthening to support rooftop HVAC equipment and roof patching. Six bids were received on Sept. 10; King Architecture prepared the bid tabulation. The engineer's estimate was in the range of $620,000 to $640,000, meaning the successful bid was substantially below the estimate.
The council approved the motion and authorized the mayor to sign the contract. City staff will move forward with contract execution and scheduling; tax and final contract figures will be determined at signing.
