Brenham ISD unveils K— literacy framework; district leaders say it will align instruction

Brenham ISD leaders presented a final draft of a districtwide literacy framework designed to align expectations and instruction from pre-K through high school. Chief Academic Officer Sarah Bohart said the framework was crafted by a coalition of teachers and leaders since May 2024 and will serve as the district's guiding North Star for literacy instruction.
Christy, the elementary curriculum coordinator, described the diagnostic work that preceded the framework and summarized its finding: "it was clarity, not commitment, that was the missing piece." Amanda Dismukes, the secondary curriculum coordinator, said the work expands the focus beyond early grades and uses Science of Reading principles to ensure literacy instruction continues across content areas. Kim Graham, the outside consultant, told the board that TEA scored the submission "21 of 21 points," calling the product exemplary. Trustees and staff emphasized that implementation (coaching, monitoring and common language) is the next step.
