Lynden council approves 279-acre southwest annexation, takes on Flynn Road segment

The Lynden City Council on Oct. 7 approved Ordinance No. 24-1692, the final step in annexing approximately 279 acres on the southwest edge of the city. Councilor Brent Lenssen moved to approve the ordinance and Councilor Kyle Strengholt seconded; the motion passed on a 7-0 vote.
The annexation covers land designated for industrial (IBZ), low-density residential (RMD) and public use (PU). Whatcom County and the Boundary Review Board reviewed the application and conditioned the Board's approval on Lynden assuming maintenance of roughly 1,000 feet of Flynn Road between the two annexed parcels. The city's legal description was adjusted to include the Flynn Road right-of-way so the public works department will maintain the continuous roadway rather than leaving a county-maintained gap.
The approval completes annexation application number 24-01 for the SW Urban Growth Area. The council record notes review by the Technical Review Committee and Planning Commission and that staff and the Community Development Committee had no objections to the revised legal description and maintenance arrangement.
