Los Lunas trustees approve extension for MAP-funded NM 6 and NM 263 design work

Mayor Charles Griego and the Board of Trustees voted 4-0 on Feb. 26 to approve Resolution 26-03, authorizing an extension of Municipal Arterial Program (MAP) funding for design and construction of improvements on New Mexico 6 and New Mexico 263. Michael Jaramillo, who presented the item, said the village has experienced repeated design delays tied to final reviews with the New Mexico Department of Transportation and requested the extension to keep the project on schedule.
"This would be the second time that I bring this item. We've had some delays in our design work for this project," Jaramillo said when explaining the need for more time. Councilor James Runyon asked when the project would be completed; Jaramillo replied that review cycles have repeatedly required small adjustments even after reaching 100% review, which has delayed finalization.
The approval motion was moved by Councilor Ortiz and seconded by Councilor Romero; the motion passed on a vote of 4-0 (Romero, Ortiz, Runyon, Chavez – yes). The council did not add conditions to the extension; staff said they will return with any future budget actions if the village receives awards or needs allocations for FY2027.
Why it matters: The extension preserves the village’s eligibility to continue design and construction work on two state routes that carry local traffic and may affect timing for related improvements and future funding requests.
