Planning commission tables fire response wording change, asks Fire Rescue to appear

The Planning Commission on Aug. 21 voted to table a proposed text amendment (Z24000005) to the Alachua County Comprehensive Plan that would clarify fire level-of-service guidelines by specifying travel time metrics.
Ben Chumley explained that the proposed change would add the words "travel time" to existing level-of-service guidelines so the comprehensive plan aligns with National Fire Protection Association metrics and county practice. Chumley said the change was recommended by Alachua County Fire Rescue staff.
Commissioner Walsh raised concerns about whether the amendment accurately reflects NFPA standards and argued the commission should hear from fire professionals before acting. "Without having fire and rescue here to answer, why are you asking for that little bit on travel time?" he asked. Multiple commissioners agreed that professional firefighters should be present to explain the intended alignment with NFPA and the practical implications for station siting and response times.
A substitute motion to table the item until Fire Rescue can attend passed; commissioners asked staff to schedule Fire Rescue representation at the Planning Commission’s next available meeting and noted the item will still be considered by the Board of County Commissioners after Planning Commission action.
