DRC approves Post Springs boat launch replacement; parks staff flags west ramp disrepair

Alachua County’s Development Review Committee voted Aug. 15 to approve a final development plan and floodplain permit for improvements at Post Springs Park, including a new 1,631-square-foot dock, a kayak launch, and ADA-accessible parking and routes.
Jacob Stau, planner for Growth Management, said staff supports authorizing a dock larger than standard limits as a public-access benefit and recommended approval with conditions that require any FDEP permits and prohibit aquatic vegetation removal without county authorization.
During committee questions, Ed Williams of the Parks Department described recurring flood damage at the site and clarified that the project’s scope focused on fixing the boardwalk and kayak launch rather than repairing the existing west-side boat ramp. "We this whole entire scenario has received a lot of damage, multiple flood cycles, the river rising and falling and that sort of thing," Williams said, adding that the concrete ramp was not part of the current scope but that parks staff could look into repairs if the committee wanted that added.
A committee member noted the current ramp’s poor condition and recounted an incident where a trailer axle was damaged. After discussion, a committee member moved to approve the plan with the stated conditions; the motion passed. The approval requires submission of required FDEP documentation to county staff before construction.
