Yolanda Brown, interim director of development for East Cooper Community Outreach (ECHO), told the council the nonprofit has completed a "Beyond Our Walls" fundraising campaign and will bring a mobile office to town to remove transportation barriers for seniors and low‑income residents. "We've raised $5,600,000 during that campaign, which allowed us to bring all of our services back from Mount Pleasant and also to provide the transportation services," Brown said, announcing a community preview of the new vehicle on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Brown described long travel times and unaffordable ride‑hail costs for local residents who need food, medical and social‑service appointments. Council welcomed the mobile unit and pledged to coordinate site access; ECHO will begin regular service at a Berkeley Electric Cooperative location three days a month beginning in September and will expand service offerings as on‑board capacity grows.
