County funds standardized airway-management training for all medics

Columbia County's EMS leadership told the committee May 19 it will contract with an Airway Management Education Center for standardized airway-management training for county medics, at a cost not to exceed $5,500.
"They will provide all the course content, the material involved...Our countywide medical director, doctor Stipa, will be involved in teaching this course," the EMS representative said. The training will run eight to 16 hours per medic and agencies agreed to stagger sessions so field coverage is maintained. The county plans to reimburse agencies historically for hours spent in training to avoid leaving providers understaffed.
Committee members approved the contract by voice vote. EMS staff said the course is intended to provide standardized clinical education across the county and to address skill areas such as airway management that are challenging in pre-hospital settings.
