The Board considered Board Policy FD (Local) addressing homeschool student participation in University Interscholastic League (UIL) activities and approved a local policy that does not allow homeschool students to participate in UIL events in Channelview ISD.
Public commenter Erick Guzman spoke to the Board "concerning Board Policy FD (LOCAL) regarding homeschool students and UIL Participation. Asking the Board to opt-in." During the action phase, Mrs. Lynette Breedlove moved to approve the policy not allowing homeschool student participation; Mr. Ramiro Granados seconded. The motion carried 5–2: Breedlove, Granados, Ybarra, Cedillo and Dennis in favor; Hector Martinez opposed; Shumona Collins abstained.
The vote implements district-level restrictions on UIL eligibility for homeschooled students and closes the option Guzman urged the Board to adopt.
