Chapel Hill ISD approves bilingual certification waiver to allow temporary assignments

The Chapel Hill ISD board voted Oct. 20 to approve a Bilingual Education Application for Certification Waivers, allowing the district to temporarily assign qualified individuals who are actively pursuing required state bilingual certifications but do not yet hold them. Mayanin Smart, Director of Bilingual and ESL Programs, presented the request and explained the waiver process and required documentation for submission to the Texas Education Agency.
Smart said the district will implement a support and monitoring plan to ensure instructional quality and track each individual’s progress toward certification. The motion to approve the waiver was made by Rickey Mosley and seconded by David Acker and passed unanimously with one trustee absent.
