Castleberry shifts 7th‑grade math to an algebra‑on‑track model to boost outcomes

Scott Hutchings, lead secondary coordinator, told the board Castleberry ISD has changed how it places students into accelerated math tracks to broaden access to algebra by 8th grade.
"All students in 6th and 7th grade are on track right now to stay with algebra 1 in 8th grade," Hutchings said, explaining the district’s intention to delay final tracking decisions and embed more 8th‑grade content earlier. He presented unit and benchmark results showing increases—unit assessments where on‑level 7th graders taught 8th‑grade content moved from lower meets percentages last year to substantially higher percentages this year—and emphasized daily PLCs and coaching support for teachers, including pairing a first‑year teacher with veteran colleagues.
Board members and a parent praised early results and teacher communication. Hutchings acknowledged staffing challenges and retention concerns but said the district expects the strategy to maintain or exceed the 35% STAR goal for 7th/8th grade meets when cohorts are compared consistently.
No formal policy change was required; Hutchings said the district will continue to monitor unit tests and upcoming benchmark data.
