County staff report recycling event challenges; paper-shred rates rise and education event postponed

At a 10:30 a.m. meeting with county staff, Courtney O'Flaherty provided updates on recycling and litter-route operations. O'Flaherty said John began riding with Dave to cover the litter route on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She reported Allshred increased its rates for this year's paper-shred event; Cooper Tire remains available for the tire-recycling event; and multiple churches and businesses declined to host recycling bins. O'Flaherty said she is continuing outreach to alternate locations.
O'Flaherty also said an education event scheduled for the prior week was postponed to Feb. 20 because of bad weather. Commissioner William Bateson asked how many education events the program hosted last year; O'Flaherty said 30. The commissioners discussed staying compliant with Environmental Protection Agency requirements as part of ongoing operations and outreach.
