Representative Brandy Donahue (44th Legislative District), speaking as interim chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, told the Juneteenth gathering that the caucus is pursuing policies aimed at undoing historical inequities.
She cited programmatic wins and ongoing priorities: "This year, we codified the Community Reinvestment Fund to ensure that it continues, to support communities that have negatively been impacted by the war on drugs. We've got a study to look at reparations. We have been working on equity in cannabis. We've been working on juvenile justice," she said. Donahue framed these measures as part of translating representation into concrete policy for Black Washingtonians.
Donahue also noted the caucus' size and legislative footprint, saying it is bicameral with members in both the state Senate and House and that caucus members make up a significant portion of the Democratic caucus in the House. She emphasized that representation should lead to tangible changes such as homeownership programs and investments in communities harmed by past policy choices.
