Cherokee ISD reviews 2025–26 student, athletic and employee handbooks ahead of Aug. 11 vote

Superintendent Jennifer Bordner told the board the student handbook will incorporate HB 1481 device rules and a revised discipline plan: suspension/DAEP will no longer be mandatory for nicotine, vapes and e‑cigarettes; instead the handbook proposes 10 days of in‑school suspension with a reevaluation after 10 days.
Bordner summarized additional handbook changes: teachers may remove students for behavioral reasons and must establish a behavior plan within three days; the district will permit unassigned respiratory devices (inhalers, EpiPens, NARCAN) on campus as needed; the athletic handbook shows no changes from 2024–25; and the employee handbook contains minor revisions including a 24‑hour requirement to report suspected child abuse and immediate LEA/TEA notification for suspected inappropriate relationships. The board will consider formal adoption of the code of conduct and handbooks at the Aug. 11 meeting.
