The Cherokee Independent School District Board of Education on July 29 unanimously voted to implement rules under HB 1481 that bar personal communication devices during the instructional day, including at lunch, and require devices to be stored silent or powered off in a student’s backpack or locker.
Superintendent Jennifer Bordner presented the proposal and detailed enforcement steps: "no personal communication devices during the instructional day on campus — including lunch," and she noted that "phones in use will be collected & $15 to get it back with a parent — can dispose of phone after 90 days if not paid/claimed." Rodney Johnson moved to implement HB 1481 and Travis Shannon seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Board members discussed discipline logistics and how the changes will be incorporated into the student handbook for board approval at the August 11 meeting. The district will add the HB 1481 language to the code of conduct and the student handbook so staff, students and families have the full penalty and retrieval process in writing.
