Architects present updated plans, target Jan. 1, 2026 start for new Flatonia ISD administration building

Architects from SZS presented updated design and development plans for Flatonia ISD's new administration building during the Sept. 8 board meeting.
Wade Zimmer of SZS and Abigail LaRussa told the board the project is in the design and development stage. Zimmer said the building footprint has been adjusted to sit closer to the corner of E. 4th Street and S. Converse Street, and that the retention pond has been reduced and will be positioned directly behind the trash dumpster. He said the main entrance will face E. 4th Street and that the board seating area in the meeting room will be raised about one foot for improved visibility. Zimmer said SZS prefers a metal roof for quality and cost reasons and will provide color samples for review.
Mr. Sodek confirmed a paper set of plans had been given to district leadership for review and said the updated plans were released the day of the meeting. The architects stated the project needs board approval at the next regular meeting for the schedule to hold and for construction to begin around Jan. 1, 2026.
The presentation included specific siting and design choices but did not record final decisions on interior finishes or the exact roof color. Board members asked clarifying questions about property boundary lines and roof materials; Zimmer explained the dotted lines on the map represent property boundaries and reiterated the metal roof recommendation.
The administration will return the revised plans for formal approval at the Oct. 9 regular board meeting, according to the project timeline discussed at the meeting.
