The Evant ISD Board of Trustees on March 23 formally found that, of the nine buses operated by or contracted for use by the district, three buses have no passenger seat belts, four buses have two‑point (lap) seat belts only, and two buses have three‑point seat belts for all passengers and the driver.
Trustee Lauren Goins moved that the board record the finding and determine "that the estimated cost to equip all non-compliant buses with three‑point seat belts is approximately $210,000, and that the District’s budget does not currently permit compliance with Texas Transportation Code §547.701(e)." Trustee Stevan Stanford seconded the motion, which carried 5‑0. The motion invoked the budget‑based exception under §547.701(e)(1).
The board directed the superintendent to submit the report required by §547.701(f) to the Texas Education Agency and to present that report to the board no later than May 29, 2026. The motion also "authorizes the District to accept gifts, grants, and donations under §547.701(h) to assist in meeting the three‑point seat belt requirement."
