Trustees on the Southampton waterfront board put a dock extension application on hold after applicants told the panel that the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has started enforcing a 2.5-foot appreciable-water-depth standard for docks.
The applicant’s presenter said the proposed plan included a floating dock extending about 137 feet from the mean high-water line in order to reach deeper water, but that DEC reviewers have pushed the applicant to extend docks in some cases to meet the 2.5-foot figure. "They came back to us and said we'd rather you go all the way out to that that 2.5 right from the, you know, broken kind of, drainage pipe," the presenter said. Trustees discussed alternatives — a stick dock, chocks, or shifting the orientation — and agreed to hold the application to obtain clearer DEC guidance and to give applicants time to revise cover sheets and plans.
The board asked applicants to supply revised, stamped plans and to add required plan notes, lighting and ladders where appropriate. Chair (speaker 2) said the board would continue working with applicants rather than dismiss the request outright: "So, I think what we're gonna do is we're gonna hold this. We're gonna keep talking about this because we don't wanna just shut this down." The item will return after applicants supply the requested materials and any DEC comments are available.
