Southampton Rotary offers to fund life jackets, cites drowning at inlet; trustees agree to follow up

Tim Corwin of the Southampton Rotary asked trustees to consider a sponsored life-jacket program, additional signage, and better life-ring placement after a recent drowning at a town inlet.
"If that little girl had been wearing a life jacket, this way this tragedy would not have occurred," Corwin said while describing recent rescues and the Rotary’s proposal to fund up to 246 life jackets for town loaner stations at an estimated program cost cited at $6,900. He urged bilingual signage and a visible, maintained life-jacket station.
Trustees said they had already discussed life-ring placement with marine patrol and were receptive to scheduling a longer work-session to explore the Rotary’s proposal and the appropriate town role in maintaining stations and signage. One trustee noted the town will coordinate with marine maintenance on placement and that staff can follow up on maintenance and signage issues.
The proposal drew support from trustees and members of the South Hampton Volunteer Ambulance, and trustees agreed to invite the Rotary back for a detailed conversation on implementation, seasonal maintenance, and possible fundraising or partnership arrangements.
