District staff told the board the district has a memorandum of understanding with the 502nd Security Forces Squadron to provide a School Resource Officer at each campus. The district noted these officers "meet all the training requirements of the US Air Force" but "are not commissioned as peace officers in the State of Texas," which is the basis for seeking the Good Cause Exemption. The board recorded the vote as unanimous (Ayes: Nicholas, Zinnante, Braxton, White).
Board materials say the exemption is required when a district cannot provide an armed security officer who is a commissioned peace officer in the state. The resolution adoption places the district in compliance with the statutory process for claiming the exemption while campus SROs remain provided under the MOU.
