Three members of the public spoke during the council’s public-comment period, offering both local requests and national political commentary.
Anne Henriksen (Zealand) opened by thanking firefighters and then criticized a recently elected council member’s apparent refusal to recite the pledge of allegiance, saying that elected office carries an expectation to uphold the U.S. and Michigan constitutions. Henriksen also made broader political assertions about perceived threats to American institutions. She said, “We pledge allegiance to The United States Of America, not the flag, 1 nation under God.” Council did not respond during public comment and the remarks were not debated on the record.
Martha Capistani (Holland) urged attention to the upcoming November election and criticized national officials and proposals she described as extreme. She made several specific claims about immigration numbers, saying, “It is estimated that there were 10,000,000 or more people who entered the country illegally under the Biden administration,” and criticized political figures she described as endorsing policies she opposed. The council did not engage with those assertions during the public-comment period.
Brian Barlow (Holland) focused on local issues including parking for a new apartment on 8th Street, faded crosswalks near Holland High School along Van Raalte, an obscured stop sign at 22nd Street, and traffic backups on Highway 31 between 16th and James; he offered to provide marina-planning advice, noting his decades of experience as a private yacht captain.
