Arden Hills EDC weighs flags versus permanent gateway signs, prioritization and cost

Senior Planner Elena Fransen reopened the EDC’s earlier gateway sign conversation and asked commissioners to assess proposed locations and identify any additional sites. Fransen said renderings and a cost estimate for the Lexington and Highway 96 corner were completed in 2017 and asked whether the current look should be changed or flags used instead for visibility.
Commissioners discussed tradeoffs: Commissioner Kristine Poelzer favored flags along County Road E and the Arden Hills side of Lexington; Commissioner Ted Brausen suggested prioritizing Snelling and entry points with higher traffic; Chair Judd Murchie said the commission should be sure any expenditure demonstrably supports EDC goals and not simply emulate neighboring Shoreview. Community Development Director Jake Reilly noted proposed gateway signs would be relatively low cost and made from structural foam.
