Barre City Council approves additional paving on South Main and Washington streets

The Barre City Council on Aug. 4 approved additional contracted paving projects focused on South Main Street and sections of Washington Street to address deteriorating surfaces and avoid severe winter potholes.
Public works staff (Mister Baker) told the council the work will use a paving machine with an estimated one- to 1.5-inch shim and that the contractor expects to complete the job in about four nights. "We're estimating an inch and 0.5 shim," Baker said, describing surface thickness and noting the result should produce a smoother driving surface compared with smaller "band-aid" repairs used previously.
Councilors asked about neighborhood timing, utility work on Woodland Drive and the state’s upcoming mill-and-repave on some corridors. Staff said concentrating work in an area reduces contractor mobilization charges and allows the city to stretch its paving dollars; councilors also discussed nightwork traffic control plans. The motion to approve the additional paving was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
