A divided Board of Trustees repeatedly failed to elect a presiding officer before appointing Trustee Ernie Lopez as Chairman Pro‑tem at the Village of Steger’s Jan. 21 meeting. Clerk Joseph Zagone opened nominations in the absence of a president; nominees included Gerald Stewart, William Joyce and Ernie Lopez. After a string of 3–3 roll calls, Trustee Perchinski moved to appoint Trustee Lopez as Chairman Pro‑tem, a motion seconded by Trustee Trotier that carried with four ayes and two no votes.
The nominations process consumed the opening portion of the meeting and briefly stalled other business. Clerk Zagone observed the tie votes and said, "we are at a stalemate again," before the successful motion. The board then moved on to routine items including approval of prior minutes and departmental reports.
