Groesbeck ISD board votes not to adopt SB11 prayer resolution

The Groesbeck ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Feb. 24 not to adopt a resolution implementing SB11’s prescribed period of prayer and reading of the Bible or other religious texts.
Board President Aslone Foy presided over a public hearing in which Cindy Ensminger presented the 2024–25 Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) and staff discussed how the district currently accommodates student prayer. Superintendent Scott Cummings told trustees, "We do offer a lot of ways that allow kids to pray at school. Trying to figure out how, when, and where for SB11. When we already do this. We do offer a moment of silence." The board took formal action after that discussion.
Trustee Stephen Bradley moved that the board not adopt the SB11 resolution; Trustee Jason Milstead seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously with votes recorded for Aslone Foy, Jim Longbotham, Jason Milstead and Stephen Bradley. The minutes do not record additional conditions or a directive to staff to return with alternative language.
The decision leaves in place the district’s existing practices, as described by staff at the hearing. No public comments were recorded on the resolution during the hearing period.
