Steger board delays selection of interim mayor until May

The Village of Steger Board of Trustees voted to table action on selecting an interim mayor until the board's first meeting in May.
Clerk Joseph Zagone opened the March 3 meeting and, after discussion, Trustee Joyce moved to table the mayoral-selection item. Attorney James Vasselli advised that the board has discretion under Robert's Rules and Illinois law to determine how to select a chair, but the board nonetheless approved the tabling motion 4–2. "Do you mean having a chair to run the board meeting?" Vasselli asked during the discussion, explaining procedural options.
Trustees Lopez and Trotier voted no on the motion to table; Trustees Thurmond, Stewart, Joyce and Perchinski voted aye. Following the vote, Clerk Zagone solicited nominations and the board appointed a chairman pro‑tem to preside for the meeting, rather than selecting an interim mayor at this session.
Why it matters: Tabling the decision postpones the formal selection of an interim municipal leader and preserves the board's ability to act after upcoming election results. The item may return to a future agenda for formal consideration.
