Hardin-Jefferson ISD names 2026 Teachers of the Year, awards education foundation grants

The board recognized Teachers of the Year at each campus and listed Hardin-Jefferson Education Foundation grant recipients for classroom projects including hydroponics, reading games, theatre kits, AI and engineering kits, and a makerspace lab.
During the May 18 meeting the board highlighted campus achievements, naming the district’s 2026 Teachers of the Year: High School Carl Tucker; HJ Junior High School Kym Fontenot; China Elementary School Margaret Swope; and Sour Lake Elementary School Dana Pace. The board also recognized the High School Soccer team and state qualifiers.
The board announced Hardin-Jefferson Education Foundation grant recipients and their project focus areas: Kristy Walker (China Elementary, hydroponics), Amy Harris (Sour Lake Elementary, reading games), Ebonique Veal (HJ Junior High, portable cross-curricular theatre kit), Christy Bean (HJ High School, cross-curricular biology/criminal justice STEM grants), Hope Etheridge (HJ Junior High, AI kit), Jennifer Wright (Sour Lake Elementary, engineering solutions to invasive species), and Susie Brooks (HJ Junior High, makerspace lab: Lone Star Symbols: 3D Geography and Civics).
