Walton County 4‑H shooting teams honored after state and national wins

County commissioners recognized Walton County 4‑H air rifle, smallbore and BB teams for state and national championships, and thanked Sheriff Brooks for raising more than $30,000 to support the programs.
Hank Shirley, coach of Walton County 4‑H air rifle and .22 teams, told commissioners the county’s shooters returned with top honors this year: "The sport air rifle team got 1st place team, CMP state championship for the 2nd consecutive year." He read a roll call of individual placings and noted multiple regional and national standings.
Joel Burns, the Walton County extension agent, thanked Sheriff Brooks and the Beyond the Badge partnership for funding that supports the teams. "Through his fundraising efforts with the support of Beyond the Badge, more than $30,000 has been raised this year to support these safe teams," Burns said. Coaches highlighted that the county’s teams hosted matches, sent competitors to nationals, and recorded multiple perfect test scores at state events.
The board presented a plaque to the sheriff in recognition of the first annual clay‑shoot fundraiser and congratulated graduating seniors who had lengthy competitive records. Commissioners and staff encouraged continued community support for facilities and programs that they said contribute to youth skill building.
