Parks and cultural staff asked the committee to recommend awarding the Malden (Mauldin) Public Art Trail commission to artist Melinda Hoffman for a piece titled "A Gathering." The committee heard a staff presentation explaining the public-art process, a site plan, and the artist’s rendering, then voted to forward the recommendation to full council.
Saxton described the proposed work as an interactive installation that would replace older pieces on the trail on a roughly decadal cycle. "What she has created, was a piece called the gathering. And it is, strike it's a striking abstract sculpture that celebrates the strength, the unity, and collective spirit of a community crafted from weathered steel and stainless steel," Saxton said, summarizing the artist’s intent. Staff said the sculpture would allow visitors to take photographs with the piece and that estimated height was roughly 6–8 feet; final dimensions and any extra slab or site work will be determined before installation.
A committee member moved to forward a recommendation to full council to award the commission to Melinda Hoffman. The motion passed by voice vote and staff will present the finalized site plan and budget details to full council for final approval and contracting. Staff indicated the unveiling would be timed with the city’s blues and jazz festival in 2027.
