The City Commission opened its Aug. 5 meeting with two recognitions.
Captain Junior V. Hill of the South Miami Police Department presented Detective Jacqueline Dassault with the department's Officer of the Month award for May 2025. Captain Hill praised Detective Dassault's investigative work, noting she was assigned 18 cases in May (11 active, seven inactive) and cleared 14 — including four felony arrests and the recovery of a $150,000 stolen BMW. Captain Hill contrasted her 81% clearance rate for May with a quoted national clearance rate of about 25% and described her work as "outstanding investigative performance, dedication, and professionalism." Detective Dassault thanked colleagues, supervisors and family in brief remarks.
The commission also presented a proclamation recognizing Garcia Navette Chocolatier after USA Today named it among the country's top chocolate shops (the mayor said the shop ranked No. 3 and was the only Florida business on the list). The owners accepted the proclamation and thanked the city for support of small business and community promotion.
