The Hays CISD Board of Trustees voted 7-0 on March 30 to accept preliminary budget decisions for the 2026–27 fiscal year following public comments raising concerns about proposed cuts. President Byron Severance moved to accept the district’s preliminary budget decisions, and Trustee Vanessa Petrea seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
The vote followed a public forum in which 10 guests asked to address the board, and several speakers specifically referenced agenda item K.9 and budget reductions. Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright presented slides accompanying the budget review and noted district enrollment of 24,995 with 93.6% attendance earlier in the meeting. Trustees asked questions during the presentation; Chief Financial Officer Deborah Ottmers responded to follow-up points during the discussion on the budget calendar. The board’s acceptance of the preliminary decisions authorizes staff to continue required public-notice steps and to prepare the formal budget documents for future consideration.
