Several residents used the public-comment period at the Aug. 19 City Commission meeting to urge officials to preserve Fuchs Park and avoid removing mature trees or converting green space to hard-surface recreational facilities.
"Don't take those trees down and put concrete paddle balls," Carolyn Nichols said, describing the park as "a little gem" used by families and children. Jason Lopez told commissioners that as thousands of new housing units come into the city, protecting neighborhood parks is essential to offset increased flooding and traffic, and to maintain green space for residents.
Commissioners heard the comments and discussed balancing preservation with minor, natural improvements. The mayor and other members said they support keeping neighborhood parks intact and requested staff to consider modest, low-impact investments to maintain and enhance the park's natural elements.
