Alderman Jafreya presented a draft micro-mobility ordinance and recommended a broader ordinance that addresses class 1-3 e-bikes as well as higher-powered motorized devices and modified units. The draft incorporates research, police input and a sample ordinance and aims to protect pedestrians and device users while preserving lawful recreational use.
Board members agreed to form a committee with aldermen and police representatives to finalize verbiage and to have city counsel review state statute constraints before the ordinance is published. As the alderman said, "rather than focusing solely on e bikes, we believe Long Beach should consider adopting a comprehensive micro mobility safety ordinance" to distinguish device classes and address enforcement and parental responsibility.
