Commission narrows Sunset Drive crosswalk plan to lower-cost pilot

Commissioners questioned a draft $600,000 allocation for four crosswalk locations on Sunset Drive and asked staff to pursue lower-cost alternatives and a pilot installation at a single intersection serving a senior residential building.
Director Munoz said the design work was completed for four locations and that one assembly cost estimates were approximately $14,000 each; he explained that alternatives such as above-ground beacons and smaller assemblies would reduce costs. "We went back to look at other options, which... are the poles with the lights on them, and they have little signs on them, a lot less expensive," Director Munoz said.
Several commissioners favored funding only one crosswalk now to help seniors cross safely near City Hall while deferring the full Sunset Drive redesign to the larger placemaking study, and asked staff to examine whether the city could buy assemblies and self-perform some installation to save on contractor labor and warranty costs. Staff agreed to return price comparisons and recommend a priority intersection.
