Kennedale ISD board denies Level III grievance over trustee social media activity

Following an executive-session review, the Kennedale Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to deny a Level III community member grievance. Trustee Maria Douglas moved to deny the complaint and Trustee Natalie McKay seconded; the motion passed with all present voting in favor.

As part of the motion the board provided context explaining the district's grievance process: "The District’s Grievance Process Exists to Allow the Public an Opportunity to Complain About Decisions or Actions Within the Control or Authority of the District. We Understand Concerns Have Been Expressed about the Social Media Activity of a KISD Trustee. Based on our Review of the Evidence and Guidance Provided by Legal Counsel, the Conduct Identified was Not Committed under District Authority but in the Trustee’s Capacity as a Private Citizen. The Board Does Not Have the Authority to Control the Actions of a Private Citizen, Including Candidates. We Appreciate the Engagement of Our Community and Encourage Open Dialogue from Varying Perspectives." The board recorded the denial but included that explanatory language as part of its action.
