Keller ISD board adopts 89th legislative priorities focused on funding and library oversight

The Keller ISD board unanimously adopted its legislative priorities for the 89th Texas Legislature on Feb. 27, sending a document that emphasizes increased school funding, teacher compensation and centralized oversight of library-material reviews to state leaders.
Bryce, presenting the recommended priorities, said the committee organized asks under three topics: adequate funding, adaptable student assessment and accountability, and centralization of oversight for school library books. "The topics don't stray too far from the priorities from last session," he said, and staff recommended the board adopt the language as presented and post a printable version for advocacy.
Key items the board approved include a request to increase the basic allotment (staff said Keller ISD needs an increase of roughly $1,400 per student to restore purchasing power), a push to base state funding on enrollment rather than average daily attendance and a proposal that TEA, not individual campuses, assume responsibility for rating or classifying explicit materials under recent state law and court decisions.
Board members and community speakers urged parents and PTA activists to contact legislators. The motion passed 6–0.
Why it matters: The priorities document frames the district’s lobbying goals for the legislative session and signals to state representatives that Keller ISD seeks structural changes to school finance and to how book-review burdens are allocated.
