Residents deliver 400-signature petition; Somers asks NYSDOT for safety review at Route 118/Overhill intersection

Anna Kleeja, a resident near the intersection of Route 118 and Overhill Road, presented a petition signed by about 400 residents asking the town to seek a safety evaluation from the New York State Department of Transportation.
Kleeja described witnessing accidents at the intersection and said petition signers want the town to pursue engineering solutions that could include traffic signals, turn lanes, sight-distance improvements, signage, or speed reduction measures. "This petition represents residents, commuters, parents, and families who all want the same thing, to make this intersection safer before another serious accident occurs," she said. The town agreed to direct the clerk to forward a resolution requesting an updated traffic engineering and safety review to NYSDOT and to notify the governor’s office, state legislators and county officials.
Board members noted DOT reviews can be lengthy and often depend on crash history and traffic counts, but expressed support for the petition and said police and fire departments have backed safety improvements in the past.
