Parks board cleared to solicit landscape-architect proposals for Bailey Park update

The Somers Town Board voted Aug. 6 to allow the Parks & Recreation Board to solicit proposals from landscape architects to update the previously approved Bailey Park plan.
Kevin Westerman, chair of the Parks & Recreation Board, described a scaled-back plan that retains gathering space near the gazebo, adds small permanent seating areas and improves native plantings. He emphasized ADA access from new sidewalk connections and said the design meets Business Historic Preservation District guidelines. Westerman said rec fees will fund design work, and the board heard that the cost to re-engage a landscape architect would be modest and not necessitate a formal sealed-bid process under the town's procurement thresholds.
Following public comments and board discussion, the town authorized issuing an RFP and asked staff to ensure coordination among stakeholders, including the architectural review and historical committees.
