Residents oppose Granite Point development as Somers seeks $5M WQIP grant to acquire site

Fred Hagan spoke for residents opposed to further approvals for a planned 23‑lot development at Granite Point, a peninsula in the Amber (Amorak) Reservoir watershed. Hagan urged the town to deny more extensions and to require a supplemental environmental review, citing longstanding contamination at a former shooting range and potential remobilization of heavy metals and antimony were deep excavation to proceed.
Supervisor Rob Scurano announced the town applied for a New York State Water Quality Improvement Program (WQIP) land-acquisition grant for up to $5,000,000 and noted that the application would require a 25% local match (up to $1,250,000) on eligible costs if awarded. He emphasized that the grant application does not halt the developer's current planning approvals and that appraisal, legal review and negotiations would follow if the town proceeds. Residents asked the board to consider stronger local controls and state enforcement actions before any new approvals are granted.
