Superintendent: Legislature weighing STAAR overhaul; district to restrict student phones

Superintendent David Ritchey told the Lamesa ISD Board that the Texas Legislature is "possibly replacing the STAAR test with three tests throughout the year." He also said the district will bar student cell phones in classrooms "with very few exceptions." Those items were part of a broader superintendent report given at the Aug. 14 meeting.
Ritchey also announced adult cafeteria prices will be $5.25 for the 2025–2026 school year. He reminded trustees the Tax Rate Hearing is scheduled for Aug. 25 and that the board will hold another Budget Workshop on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 5:00 p.m. The superintendent emphasized that the district's Student Code of Conduct is provided by the state of Texas and follows guidance from the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
