Magnolia ISD told enrollment could reach about 20,000 within five years

Rocky Gardiner of Zonda presented the district’s demographic and housing analysis to the Magnolia ISD Board of Trustees on Jan. 12, 2026, reporting that “the district enrollment increased by over 1,773 students in the last five years.” The consultant said roughly 1,400 homes were in active inventory, about 4,500 lots available now and approximately 30,870 future lots, and that groundwork is underway on more than 2,300 lots across 12 subdivisions.
Dr. Ben King told trustees that, given current development and enrollment trends, the district’s high schools would be collectively near 101% capacity by 2028–29 and about 111% by 2030–31, and he urged planning now because a new high school can take four years to build. King also outlined operational tradeoffs, noting that a portable classroom costs about $110,000 — an amount he compared to staff and equipment tradeoffs such as two teaching positions, four instructional aides, or 110 classroom computers. There was no formal board action on the demographics presentation; staff said the material will guide facility and financial planning.
